05/21/2008 - TORRANCE, Calif. -

The all-new, completely-redesigned 2009 Honda Pilot is set to debut at dealerships nationwide on May 22 with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $27,595, plus destination and handling, for the well-equipped Pilot LX - the same as the 2008 model's price entry point, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The upscale Pilot EX starts at $30,395 and adds alloy wheels and an upgraded audio system; the Pilot EX-L, equipped with additional premium features including leather-trimmed seating surfaces and a moonroof, starts at $33,595; and the luxury-oriented Pilot Touring edition, an entirely new premium trim level for 2009 with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ as standard equipment, starts at $36,795. Pilots equipped with the available Variable Torque Management® 4-wheel-drive (VTM-4®) system have an MSRP starting at $29,195 for the Pilot LX; $31,995 for the Pilot EX; $35,195 for the Pilot EX-L; and $38,395 for the Pilot Touring.

"The timing is right for a vehicle like this as fuel prices drive families out of larger SUV's even though their lifestyles still require the type of functionality that Pilot delivers," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Advanced engine technologies help improve fuel efficiency while the interior has become even more comfortable and accommodating than the previous model."

Designed to occupy a unique position within its segment, the second-generation Pilot combines traditional SUV attributes of ruggedness, standard towing capability and functionality with the fuel economy, handling and refinement characteristics that have made crossovers popular.

The 2009 Pilot offers an authentic SUV exterior design while further enhancing on-road refinement and increasing interior functionality. A modern, stylish and spacious interior provides room for up to eight passengers while also providing more space behind the third row for items as large as a mid-size cooler or a folded stroller.

New standard engineering features on all models include a more-powerful, 250 horsepower, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with the latest generation of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) that works in 6-cylinder mode for performance and 3- or 4-cylinder mode for fuel efficiency. Additional new standard equipment includes a Class III hitch, hill start assist, larger 17-inch wheels and tires (+1-inch) and a lift-up glass hatch as part of the tailgate. New interior features include a telescopic steering column, enhanced audio systems and much more. The Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System™ is available on the Pilot EX-L and Pilot Touring. The new Pilot Touring edition introduces upscale features that include a power tailgate, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and a USB audio interface. Keyless entry, power windows, power locks and cruise control are standard on all models.

The Pilot achieves an EPA-estimated city/highway/combined fuel economy of 17/23/19 miles per gallon on two-wheel-drive models and 16/22/18 miles per gallon on four-wheel-drive models. The available, fully-automatic VTM-4 four-wheel drive is designed to deliver decision-free operation for all-weather traction and medium-duty off-road capabilities.

Standard safety equipment includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE®) body structure; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), also commonly referred to as electronic stability control, with traction control and ABS; three-row side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; a driver's front side airbag, and a front passenger's side airbag with an occupant position detection system. The Pilot is equipped with four Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) positions - more than any other SUV currently in the segment.

Honda Civic GX has Earned the Title of "Greenest Vehicle of 2008"

"Greenest Vehicle of 2008"

2007_civic_gx.jpg
The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has named the Honda Civic GX natural gas car as the greenest vehicle in 2008, for the fifth consecutive year.

In addition to the Civic GX, the gasoline Civic, Fit and Civic Hybrid were among the list of the 12 most environmentally-conscious vehicles on sale in the US. This is the eighth consecutive row that a Honda vehicle has recieved the title and the seventh consecutive year that Honda has held at least four positions in the top 12.

PRESS RELEASE:

Recognizing Honda’s application of fuel efficient and alternative fuel technologies, four Honda vehicles earned recognition from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) as the “greenest vehicles of 2008″ with the Civic GX natural gas car taking the title of the greenest vehicle for the fifth consecutive year, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. In the 11th annual ACEEE’s “Green Book® Online” ranking of environmentally responsible vehicles (available at http://www.greenercars.org/), the natural gas-powered Civic GX ranked first with the gasoline Civic, Fit and Civic Hybrid joining the list of the 12 most environmentally-conscious vehicles available to the public.

This is the eighth year in a row that a Honda vehicle received the number one ranking and the seventh consecutive year that Honda vehicles held at least four positions in the top 12, an impressive one-third of all vehicles on the list.

“The ACEEE awards speak to the commitment Honda has made to lead the industry in lowering emissions, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing dependence on oil,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “Honda continues to set the standard for socially and environmentally-responsible automotive products and our commitment to alternative fuels will further expand with the zero emissions FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle coming to market this summer.”

Using a singular measure that incorporates fuel economy, health-related pollution impacts and global warming emissions, all vehicles are analyzed and given a “Green Score.” This score is used in ACEEE’s ranking system, resulting in a ranking of each vehicle’s total environmental performance, including a list of the 12 “greenest” and 12 “meanest” vehicles. The Civic GX, first introduced in 1998, is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle certified by the EPA*, and is 90% cleaner than the average gasoline-powered car on the road today.

Honda has a long history of environmental leadership including the introduction of America’s first hybrid, the Honda Insight, delivery of the first fuel cell vehicle in the U.S., and the first vehicles to meet stricter emissions standards, including:

- The first gasoline Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV), the 1996 Honda Civic.
- The first gasoline Ultra-Low Emissions vehicle (ULEV), the 1998 Honda Accord.
- The first gasoline Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV), the 2000 Honda Accord.
- The first Advanced Technology Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV), the 2001 Civic GX natural gas vehicle.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing energy efficiency as a means of promoting both economic prosperity and environmental protection.

*EPA Tier-2, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of May 2007.

Who makes the best cars?

Consumer Reports logo

Who makes the best cars?
Honda is tops, but Ford and GM have improved

Overall, the best cars sold in the U.S. are made by Honda. That's the conclusion of a recent analysis conducted by Consumer Reports that looks at the reliability, performance, fuel economy, comfort, interior fit and finish, and ergonomics of 262 vehicles we've recently tested.

Honda, with an overall score of 78, is followed closely by Toyota (75) and Subaru (72). BMW, Mazda, Nissan, and Volkswagen are tied at 71, after rounding.

Detroit automakers garnered some of the lowest scores, but we have seen some significant signs of improvement in Ford and GM vehicles this past year.

The overall score for each automaker is based on the average overall scores of its vehicles in our road tests and its average predicted-reliability score from our Annual Car Reliability Survey, which details the problems subscribers have experienced with almost 1.3 million vehicles. We included manufacturers only if we tested at least five of their vehicles. See the automaker reports cards (available to subscribers) for a summary of each.

Other findings include the following:
  • Only two automakers, Honda and Subaru, earned the distinction of having all of the models we tested make our Recommended list. Because we have not yet tested the redesigned Subaru Impreza and WRX, Honda is the only automaker whose entire model lineup is currently recommended.

  • Some vehicles that do well in our testing tend to have a relatively high number of problems reported by owners in our reliability survey. For example, vehicles built by Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen (including Audi) achieved the best average scores in our tests. But the reliability of Volkswagen vehicles overall is below average, while Mercedes' reliability is well below average. We don't recommend vehicles with below-average reliability, which limits the number of recommended models for those automakers.

  • On the other hand, some vehicles that are very reliable don't post the best scores in our testing. Some Subaru and Toyota models, for example, score midpack or lower in our testing but are very reliable overall.

  • Of all the Ford vehicles we've tested, the percentage that we recommend jumped to 64 percent from 54 percent last year, due to improved reliability. The percentage of GM vehicles we recommend, however, dropped from 36 percent to 30 because some redesigned SUVs proved unreliable. Similarly, Chrysler's percentage dropped from 21 percent to 14, due to a number of unimpressive new vehicles.

SETTING THE STANDARD

Honda earned the top score in our analysis because it builds very reliable cars that perform very well. Its average test score is only slightly under Volkswagen's and Mercedes-Benz's. And Honda is the only automaker to earn an excellent overall reliability Rating.

But not all of Honda's models lead their class in our test Ratings. The redesigned Honda CR-V SUV, for example, can't quite match the top-ranked Toyota RAV4. The Accord was edged out by the Nissan Altima. The Honda Odyssey minivan scored slightly lower than the Toyota Sienna. And some of Honda's upscale Acura models trail their Lexus counterparts from Toyota. But Honda's strength is its consistency; its vehicles typically rate near the top of their categories.

Toyota continues to build some very impressive vehicles, such as the new Highlander, our top-scoring three-row SUV, and the Lexus LS, which earned the highest score in our current Ratings. But the automaker's reputation for reliability has shown some cracks. For the first time in years, three Toyota-built models had below-average reliability in our survey. They included Toyota's redesigned V6 Camry sedan and four-wheel-drive V8 Tundra pickup, and the Lexus GS with all-wheel drive. Still, the company builds very reliable vehicles overall and ranks third in reliability among auto manufacturers.

UPS AND DOWNS FOR DETROIT

The past year has been a mixed bag for domestic automakers. Detroit's share of the North American market dipped to its lowest level ever, just above 51 percent. For the first time in history, Toyota outsold Ford in the U.S. and outsold GM worldwide to become the world's largest automaker. Sales shrank almost 12 percent at Ford, 6 percent at GM, and just over 3 percent at Chrysler. Ford and GM racked up billions in losses. And after a nine-year merger with Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler was sold off at a multibillion dollar loss.

On the positive side, all three automakers are restructuring, and there are clear signs of improvement from Ford and GM.

In recent testing, vehicles such as the Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Malibu and Silverado, GMC Acadia and Sierra, and Saturn Outlook ranked among the best in their categories. GM's older models, however, continue to drag down its average test score. GM also builds some reliable vehicles, but overall it ranks second from the bottom in reliability, above only Mercedes-Benz.

Ford has climbed to fifth place in our reliability standings. In our latest survey, 93 percent of Ford models had average or better reliability, up from 63 percent last year. But some of Ford's latest SUVs have not matched their competition in handling, braking, or interior fit and finish.

The most recent Chrysler vehicles we've tested have been very disappointing, many with noisy, underpowered engines, poor interior craftsmanship, cramped seating, and limited visibility. Earlier this year, the company announced that it would phase out some of its older products, including the Pacifica, the PT Cruiser convertible, and the Dodge Magnum. Those were some of Chrysler's better vehicles in our testing, although some have been unreliable in our survey.

Overall, only a quarter of our recommended vehicles are from U.S. companies, which is a result of their vehicles' inconsistent reliability and performance in our testing. About half of our recommended vehicles are Japanese.

TEST RESULTS VS. RELIABILITY

If the only things that mattered to a car buyer were performance, comfort, and safety, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen (including Audi) would make the dean's list. Their cars ride and handle especially well, have comfortable seats, and have relatively good fuel economy and acceleration. But most VW-branded models and nearly all of the Mercedes models for which we have sufficient data are below average in predicted reliability.

On the other hand, Subarus have very good reliability. But in our testing they often end up only midpack within their classes. Subarus have standard all-wheel drive and typically deliver impressive ride and handling. But the Legacy and Outback suffer from tricky emergency handling and tight rear-seat leg room. And Subaru's standard all-wheel drive typically hurts fuel economy.

Similarly, Mitsubishi and Ford ranked fourth and fifth in reliability but were dragged down by their test scores, finishing 11th and 12th overall.

In the end, the companies that make the best vehicles are those that have found a way to excel in all areas: performance, interior craftsmanship, safety, comfort, and reliability. The best all-around vehicles each year continue to set a higher and higher standard for other companies to match. And that's a competition in which consumers are the ultimate winners.

Ten Toughest Cars On The Road

Consumers are finding vehicles able to withstand the daily demands of life in some unlikely places.

The Honda showroom is one. There, buyers looking for reliable, safe vehicles with low repair costs and reports of problems will find the Odyssey. It ranked first on our list of most durable vehicles. The Honda Pilot, CRV, Civic and Accord also made the list.

That's no surprise, say industry experts. The Japanese automaker typically stands above the competition in quality and reliability surveys.

In Depth: 10 Toughest Cars On The Road

"Honda builds an outstanding product," says Dave Wurster, president of Vincentric, an automotive research company. "They are highly reliable, and they last a long time. Their vehicles work well long into the future.”

Other durable rides include small SUVs like the Subaru Forester and Volvo's XC90 and the more luxurious Audi A4 and Acura RDX.

Behind The Numbers
In compiling our list, we looked at several key measures. To gauge safety, we used both the most recent National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration and Insurance Institute of Highway Safety front and side crash-test ratings. Vehicles had to have received at least a four-star rating out five from the NHTSA. Only a top rating of "good" in front, side and rear crash testing was acceptable from the institute.

Top 20 Most Dangerous Vehicles

We used Consumer Reports' 2007 Overall Road Test Scores, which is based on 50 different tests and evaluations, to determine overall vehicle performance. Vehicles had to reach a minimum of 70 out of 100 to be considered, which falls in the second-highest range of "very good."

Strategic Vision's 2007 New Vehicle Experience Study was also consulted. In it, the automotive research company measures how many owners complain of "things gone wrong" after the first 90 days of ownership. The "Problem Impact Measure" takes into consideration the level of concern each problem caused the owner, the extent to which it was resolved and the owner's level of satisfaction with the resolution. Only vehicles that exceeded or met the average for their segment were considered.

Problems measured here are not always life-threatening. One example: a knob falling off is of lesser concern to a car owner than, say, failing brakes.

Finally, we looked at Vincentric's estimated five-year repair costs, which takes into account warranties that typically cover most repairs in the first three years of ownership.

Driving Demand
Consumers have been merciless in their demand for durable cars that don't fall apart in the first five years of ownership. General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ), Ford Motor (nyse: F - news - people ) and Chrysler have lost sales over the past 20 years because of poor quality and reliability problems. After years of complaints about shoddy workmanship, Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai have focused on proving that their vehicles are made to last. They were among the first in the industry to offer 100,000-mile/10-year warranties to back up their claims.

What's been your experience with your car's reliability? Weigh in. Add your thoughts in the Reader Comments section below.

"For the most part, most vehicles are doing exceptionally well, considering where we have come from," says Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision. "But if people don't feel secure, if they don't feel the product is durable, it doesn't matter how interesting it looks, how much fun or exciting it is to drive. People will not buy your product if they have no confidence in it."

The market's durable cars are also comfortable and loaded with conveniences. The Honda Accord sedan, for example, has an eight-way, power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support. The Audi A4 is equipped with a dual-zone climate control system with an automatic seven-temperature sensor, a sun sensor and a pressure sensor. The Toyota Highlander has 14 beverage holders and second-row seats that move back and forth, recline or fold flat.

Indeed, there are vehicles designed to withstand just about anything life throws their way--including spilled sippy cups.
